The goals will be achieved by a new, more integrated, approach to the discovery and delivery of library curated materials which will better match resources to student and researcher needs. This will be a part of a wider modern integrated solution that will also bring efficiencies and significantly reduce the number of systems currently employed. This in turn will help to create better, more efficient staff workflows across the totality of print and electronic resources. It will also deliver better analytics to enable the library to more closely align library resources with course and researcher demands. Furthermore it will integrate more fully with university systems such as the VLE and finance. Such a solution will offer a stable, scalable, secure, supported and cost-effective learning environment across our 3 global campuses.

Upgrade from Millennium to (cloud based) Sierra Library Management System Upgrade & Migration to Cloud Computing Date of notice 23/02/2018 "University of the Chester intends to upgrade its existing library system which is supplied and maintained by Innovative Interfaces Global. This contract has an estimated total cost of circa 340 000 GBP over 5 years. Explanation: The University wishes to upgrade its library management system from its current iteration and hosting platform (“Millennium”, hosted on premise) to the latest release (“Sierra”, hosted in Innovative’s private cloud facility). Innovative own the intellectual property rights of the software. The existing version of the system is several years old and the upgrade process will be complicated by the need to jump several versions. As Innovative is the developer of the software, it is envisaged that this upgrade will be executed with minimal risk of technical failure. The existing system is tightly integrated with University business processes, other University systems and existing library hardware. The University has determined that transitioning to an alternative system at this time with different technical and operational characteristics would significantly impact on resources and processes and cause major disruption to all users. The significant risks of doing so would be financial, technical (including information security) and reputational. The University therefore intends to issue the contract to Innovative for the reasons stated above."

Have selected Exlibris Alma & Primo to replace Innovative Interfaces Millennium Press Release "University Librarian, Paul Reynolds, commented; “The Library’s existing integrated library system was approaching the end of its life and there were inevitably some weaknesses arising from an old design. This meant that some areas of our operations such as the management of electronic information resources were not as co-ordinated they could be, which was limiting our ability to improve the integrated delivery of resources to our users.” “A library management system that readily enables our users to discover and make optimal use of both subscribed and Open Access content is essential to improving our users’ research experience,” Reynolds continued. “Also very important is that it has to help the library’s processes. Having carefully examined our options for some time, we chose Alma for its proven ability to help us to achieve those goals. Since it is a cloud-based solution it will reduce local resource requirements and make upgrades easier. We also anticipate being able to provide enhanced access for library users to the full range of library resources, improved and updated workflows for library staff and better interoperability with other library and university systems.”

The Library Management System (LMS), together with associated resource management applications, is a corporate system. Within the University the LMS is owned and managed by Library and Student Services with support from IT Services. The University has used the Capita (previously Talis and BLCMP) LMS since 1997. The Library environment has significantly changed in the last decade and with the growing body of born digital and digitised scholarly output academic collections are increasingly becoming more electronic than print. Currently the Library's electronic journal subscriptions represent 95 % of journal subscriptions; electronic books represent about 50 % of the current collection. Though legacy print collections will remain for the foreseeable future, the move to provision of electronic library resources will continue driven by our e-first policy. The University is seeking to acquire a Unified Library System which will support this new mixed information economy, effectively manage its electronic resources including metadata and licenses and ensure quality of service provision to the Library's users. In doing so the key aim is to create more efficient processes and work-flows, and by making these efficiencies ensure services are delivered in a seamless, timely and effective manner and further improve ease of use and accessibility to information for Library users. Student interaction with the Library will improve through a more responsive system to request, discover and access material. There will be a single search box to access the collection and a single interface to interact with the Library. The Library is seeking to enter into a contract for an initial period of 5 years from implementation with an option to extend if both parties are in agreement for a further 2 years. Any subsequent extensions to the contract will be agreed by the University of Cumbria and the service provider. Selected ExLibris Alma & Primo March 2015 ExLibris Press Release From the Press Release: “The limitations of our current LMS led to a proliferation of different library systems that students had to be familiar with,” commented Caroline Rock, Director of Library and Learning Support Services at the University of Surrey. “Because of this, we were not achieving as much value for money from these systems, or the resources they provide access to, as we should. The lack of automation was not acceptable in a modern library environment and we were unable to move our staff to much more value-added tasks. When we reached the point where over 70 per cent of our expenditure was being managed and tracked via spreadsheets, we decided it was time for a new solution Original Tender notice Published:Thursday, March 27, 2014 From the tender notice:- "The University of Surrey is looking to replace the diverse systems and technologies that are currently used to support Library services. The requirement is for a fully integrated system that will manage our extensive range of electronic resources, growing collection of born digital materials as well as the traditional support to our physical and Special Collections.
